Welcome to Valencia

Valencia is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city located on the Mediterranean shore. Founded by the Romans in the year 138 BC Valencia has accumulated enormous wealth from all the cultures which have resided here over the centuries (muslim, gothic …). Stroll through Valencia and feel the plurality and evolution of a city where prosperous historical tradition and recent and innovative architecture stand side by side.

The historic centre with its religious temples, Gothic, Baroque and Modernist monuments, the varied and renowned museums, the architectural projects such as the city of Arts and Science, and the Conference Palace are but a few of the many attractions which Valencia has to offer its visitors.

Venue of the congress

Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) is a public, dynamic and innovative institution that is dedicated to researching and teaching. The UPV maintains strong bonds with its social environment and a strong presence abroad.

In the Polytechnic University of Valencia, cohabitation is part of an educational project where students and teachers alike from our five campus sites (Vera, Blasco Ibáñez, Alcoy, Gandía and Xátiva) actively take part.

Currently, the university community is made up of over 42.000 people. Of these, nearly 37.800 are students, 2.600 are members of the teaching and research staff and 1.700 are administrative and services personnel. UPV is composed of 10 schools, 3 faculties and 2 higher polytechnic schools.

Event Organization

The ITACA Institute is an research and development entity of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, created with the aim of promoting and undertaking scientific research, technological development and technology transfer initiatives in the field of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

Its technological offer is concentrated in five areas:

Itaca Areas:Digital Electronic systems and Industrial electronics, High Performance Computing Systems, Telecommunication Systems, ICT systems in Health care, Industrial applications of Electromagnetism

ITACA, presents a self-sufficient organization in its relation with the companies. In order to carry out the projects, it has a group of more than 280 people, qualified and experienced investigators and technicians, which work in laboratories with advanced equipment available in its facilities of more than 3,500 m2.

Health & Wellbeing Technologies (TSB) is the group of ITACA - ICT systems in Health care, dedicated to the application of Information and Communications Technologies in the fields of Health and Social Services. TSB develops its research by means of its 3 primary lines of action (e-Health, e-Inclusion and Quality of Life) applying to each of these areas, distinctive technologies in which the group maintains the greatest experience (Information Systems Platforms, Wireless and Mobile Communication, Knowledge Management and Ambient Intelligence Technologies).

Tourist guided visit through historic Valencia - Wednesday 21th

The bus will pick us up at the workshop venue and it will take us to the starting point of the visit.

The Old Town

We will start at the Serranos Towers, considered the most important military gothic door of Europe. We will visit:

  • Palau de la Generalitat,Currently the seat of the Valencian Government.
  • La Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados Dedicated to the patroness saint of the city and built in the XVII century in baroque style.
  • El tribunal de las Aguas(the Water Court). Meetings take place every Thursday in front of the gothic façade of the Cathedral, and have been doing so for over 1000 years.
  • La Catedral, principally a gothic Cathedral, but the overlap of differing architectural styles is apparent.
  • La Plaza Redonda a round plaza renowned for its fabric stalls. We will also see the narrowest building in Europe.
  • El Mercado Central (Central Market), art noveau building and the biggest market in Europe.
  • La Lonja de la Seda (the Silk Market), the gothic civil building most representative of the Peninsula and built for commercial transactions.
  • The Mansion of the Marquis of Dos Aguas, National Ceramic Museum. In the baroque palace, you can see the best regional ceramics pieces, as well as one representation of an ancient Valencian kitchen.

Dinner in 'Hotel Astoria'- Wednesday 21th

We will have a cocktail on the terrace of 'Hotel Astoria', located in the centre of Valencia. We will enjoy the best view of Valencia’s city centre at night while eating elaborate tapas; both traditional and modern.

The bus will take as to the hotel at the end of the dinner.

Tourist guided visit through modern Valencia - Thursday 22th

The bus will pick us up at the workshop venue.

Panoramic view by bus around the most important buildings of Valencia, like the different century bridges in the ancient Turia´s riverbed, the Colon´s Market, the North Station, Bullring, Quart Towers, etc.

We will stop to visit the outside of the different enclosures of the Arts and Sciences City. It is located in the old riverbed. Its surface is about 350.000 m2.

L’Umbracle, designed as a boulevard and place to see Sculpture Avenue.

The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía is the final segment of Valencia's City of Arts and Sciences. It completes its artistic side, designated to enjoy the opera, theatre and dance.

Later we will visit the outside of the “Príncipe Felipe” Museum, the first model in the world of science museums of the XXI century.

We will continue our walk around the City of Arts, stopping finally at the Hemisferic. The design symbolises a human eye; for this reason it is also known as The Eye of the Universe.

Finally, the Oceanogràfic (only the outside), the biggest aquatic park in Europe. It is conceived as a natural park and has many important ecosystems of the world.

Gala Dinner - Thursday 22th

We will enjoy a gala dinner in the splendid Palacio de la Exposición, a perfect setting to taste a delicious meal in a pleasant atmosphere. The Palacio de la Exposición was built for the regional Exposition held in Valencia in 1909.

Its style evokes a peculiar neo-Gothic image, combining the civil, military and religious architecture of the age. One highlight is the large Salón Noble, where the dinner will take place, with its lead-lines glass Windows, ironworks and skirting boards made with glazed tiles designed specifically for the occasion.

Tourist Visit for attendees companion - Thursday 22th

The Price includes the entry to L’Oceanogràfic and the guide.

  • 10:00 h. – Meeting with the guide at hotel Confortel Aqua. Departure to l´Oceanogràfic.
  • 10:20 h. – Visit to the l´Oceanogràfic, the biggest aquatic park in Europe. Conceived as a natural park, it has many important ecosystems of the world. We will enjoy a great dolphin´s show in this Europe's largest dolphinarium.
  • 13:15 h. – Departure to the hotel Confortel Aqua.
